Our Primary Bedroom Renovation and Makeover

Here we go again!

I think renovating may be an addiction.

It's definitely not something we LOVE to live in and we really are tired of it and just want it DONE to enjoy it all. But what we do love is coming up with new ideas of how things can function well for us and how we can change them in SIMPLE (for the most part) and cost effective ways. When we bought our home FIVE years ago we definitely underestimated how much work it was really going to take, as most first time DIY renovators do. Our bedroom was only a priority to make it LIVEABLE and for it to be CLEAN and FUCTIONAL for us.

We have now decided to UNDO what we have COVERED UP and make this space even better!

We are renovating this now (while our additon is still underconstruction) not because we are CRAZY, well maybe a little, but because all of our pre existing windows need to be pushed out to accomodate for the new strapping and siding. This made the decision easy to renovate our bedroom and RELOCATE the windows now.

What we DON'T love about our bedroom:

  1. The window locations (looking at our fence)

  2. The painted wood panelling

  3. Colour of the pine ceiling

Our house was ALL wood panelling , layers of carpet on carpet and had been SMOKED in for nearly 40 years and to be honest, there was a mouse infestation. Oh yes, I don't know what we were thinking but we were just so excited to own a home and a creative outlet. I grew up with my grandparents constantly flipping properties and this house reminded me of them, so how bad could it be. Well, watching someone do it and actually DOING IT YOURSELF is completely different!

The closets were located on either side of the ENSUITE washroom. There was also an awkward "hallway" on the right with the entry door to the bedroom but also, a sliding PATIO door to the outside.

To solve that issue, we decided to REMOVE the old bedroom door, WIDEN the entrance to the width of the hallway and add a partial wall with POCKET DOORS across from the exterior sliding patio doors. This worked out beautifully for us!

We decided to tear out these TWO closets because overall for us, they were just not functional. The idea I had was to add a WHOLE wall of closet space to the far back exterior wall which allowed much more functionality and a QUICK fix.

It also allowed for saving money! HOW? Well, by covering the entire back wall with Ikea closets we save having to re-drywall. The old existing drywall under the panelling was fine for the time being. Remember, we only had 30 DAYS before we had to move in (we had to be out of our apartment).

We just covered it up with the ikea closets. We only added new drywall to the partial wall extension and where we took out the closets.

We then painted the wood panelling on the wall where the window are. It may seem a little pointless why not just re-drywall that wall too, but MONEY and TIME was tight!

FAST FORWARD TO NOW...

THIS is what was behind our Ikea Pax systems!

The old funky wallpaper and drywall. We took out the Ikea pax system and put them to the OTHER end of the room.

OUR PLAN:

  1. Remove Closets and Relocate on other side.

  2. Remove old windows

  3. Add three new horizontal windows at the top of old drywall

  4. Add new vertical window where the old window is to the right (see above) we have to add the vertical window for fire/safety.

  5. Add outlet recepticals

  6. New trim (match rest of the house)

We chose to put horizontal windows to maximize the east morning SUNRISE light that will fill our room! This back wall as you saw ABOVE was old drywall and wallpaper that we simply covered up to save cost when we first renovated and add the closets over top!

It is amazing how a rooms entire FEEL changes when we make the space more functional and practical. We did HAVE to do this to our room but with the exterior siding being replaced the time is NOW to make any changes. We didn't love our windows being down the fence line, OR that our bed faced the patio door. We chose reasonably priced windows that we purchased from Home Depot to save some cost. We didn't feel we needed more than that as these windows are not large. We put more cost into the very LARGE windows on our ADDITION as we felt we needed. Not all our windows on our home are the same or from the same place and that's OK!

We still have the pine ceiling to fix, paint the walls and trim they are only primed at the moment and move the fan to the center of the room.

+ Linen Pillow Cover I have ALOT of H&M Pillow covers! They are my favorite for a few reasons. They are beautiful, reasonably priced and great quality. It so much easier to purchase good inserts and switch covers as you want to. ie. holidays

+ Woven Basket These baskets have held up very well for me. I actually prefer them to the ikea ones because I find them much more sturdy. They function well for hiding lots of stuff. ie. kids toys, yoga gear, blankets, towels...

+ Bedspread Great for warm summer nights and as an addition on cold winter nights. This spread literally could be used for so many things! And its 100% cotton.

+ Fringe Throw Who doesn't love throws? I have WAY too many or can you really have too many? This one is very soft and comes in many colours.

+ Stoneware Plant Pot I have bought about 5 different pots from H&M this season and loved them all! I mostly have Spider plants, snake plants and succulents.

+ Linen Bed sheets I LOVE these sheets! They are so soft and get more soft with each wash. I won't sleep on anything else. Yes, they are an investment but you sleep on them every single night!

+ Ceiling Fan This we have had for about four years now and no issues. We like having a fan on at night even in the winter so we use it alot. They still have it in stock.

+ Nightstand The Hemnes nightstand has done us well. We are getting new ones for our bedroom but I still do love these. I may still just paint them, maybe.

+ Muslin Pillow Cover Cozy and neutral, again I just like to buy covers for my pillow and especially from here. They are at a great price and easy to change up your style in any season.

+ CandIe I really like having candles in the home. This one smells really good!
